An island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, to the north of Sicily, Stromboli is a still active volcano, around 12.6 kilometres square and towering over 3000 feet above the sea. The island has a total population of around 350 people, split between the villages of San Bartolo, San Vincenzo and Ginostra. The only way to access the island is by boat. Do visit the pleasant black lava sand beach, the tiny remote villages and don't miss the volcano itself, where eruptions can be viewed up close with relative safety.
