In the centre of Italy, in the region of Lazio lies the city of Tivoli. It lies close to Rome, around 30 kilometres apart, and predates the capital by several centuries. It is located at the picturesque falls of the Aniene River, and contains several important sits, including the two World Heritage sites of Villa Adriana, or Hadrian's Villa and the Villa d'Este. The former is a complex which emulates the Roman style while the latter is a stunning sample of Renaissance architecture. Don't miss the incredible Temple of Vesta, a Roman temple which has proved the inspiration for much Romantic art.
