One of the least populous countries in Europe, with just over 2.2 million citizens Latvia lies to the north of the continent, and is bordered by Estonia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus. Its coastline skirts the Baltic Sea, and its capital city, Riga is in the central northern area of the country. The only official language is Latvian, though most of its inhabitants can also speak Russian. Latvia is a member of the United Nations and the UN. With its booming, stable economy the country is considered to have a very high Human Development Index.
