Vikings journeyed to the east through the Amber Way from Riga, and it subsequently served as an important trading harbour. Founded as a city in 1201, since then it has gone through many different rulers and occupations including Swedish and Russian before becoming a Soviet republic. It’s colourful and sometimes haunting history is evident throughout the streets, from the cobbled old town to the Soviet era buildings. The city is a living monument to the triumphs and struggles which its people have seen. Now the capital of independent Latvia, the city stands proud, shaken but not defeated. Architecture damaged during World War Two has been lovingly restored, and the renovated masterpieces which line its streets give Europe’s iconic capitals a run for their money.
The city is divided by the River Daugava, with the new town and the old town defining the two banks.
