The second largest city in Lithuania, Kaunas covers over 15,000 hectares, and is situated beside the Kaunas Reservoir, the country's largest body of water, at the confluence of the Nemunas and the Neris Rivers. It has a population of 321,000 people living in its urban areas, and is known as a former, temporary, capital. Its cold climate means the best time to visit is in July, when the temperature is a more manageable 16 degrees. View some of the old sites; the Castle, city hall and square are good places to start. The city hosts a number of festivals throughout the year - try to time your visit to incorporate one!
