Smack in the centre of Poland, around 135 kilometres from Warsaw lays the city of Lodz. It has a total population of 742,000 people and its name translates literally as "boat". Traditionally an industrial city, Lodz now focuses on its history of filmmaking and artistic traditions, to tempt visitors to its limits. As well the existing trace of Soviet architecture and monuments, there are curious factories and textile museums to explore for those intrigued by such things. For others, the nearby lake and forest might be more appealing.
