Guide to Zakopane

map
At the foot of the Tatra Mountains, to the south of Poland lies the town of Zakopane, with a population of around 24,000 residents. Close to the border with Slovenia, the town is around 1000 metres above sea level, making it a popular resort for mountaineering and skiing. It's also a former health resort, and has its own distinctive architectural style. Don't forget to buy a ciupage, a lightweight wooden shepherd's axe which makes the perfect quirky souvenir.
