Tavira is a really pretty little town with the river Gilau running refreshingly through the middle of it. The old centre of the town is large, dotted with little chapels, churches, municipal buildings, squares, docks and a beautiful old roman bridge. Its history as a fishing town is evident from the chimneys of former fish-canning factories and the still lively riverside where you will see fishermen mending their nets and boats.
There is a really good selection of shops - you can get all the usual tourist stuff like bit-bat, cards, trashy souvenirs, but there is also a real sense of heritage and local skill with the artesan products available to buy from cork to majolica, tiles to lace and embroidery.
