Guide to Lake Baikal

map
Lake Baikal is the oldest lake in the world, as well as the deepest, at 744 metres. It lies to the south of Siberia, and remarkably holds over 20% of the world's freshwater, which also makes it one of its clearest lakes. The southwestern edge of Lake Baikal is skirted by the Trans-Siberian Railway, and is recognised as a World Heritage Site. View the lake in comfort from a train carriage, head to the its largest island, Olkhon, or if you're very adventurous, take part in the cross country cycle race in Buguldeyka village and ending in Yelantsy.
