The second largest of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, Fuerteventura has a population of 74000 and is a UNESCO declared biosphere reserve. A popular tourist destination, the area is also a place of astounding natural beauty, with a peculiar black sand beach, whales and dolphin sightings are commonplace and rugged coastline. Surfing and windsurfing its waters is particularly enjoyable, and don't miss the open air sculptures, spread across the island in various locations.
