Guide to Santiago de Compostela

map
The capital of the Galicia community in Spain, the city of Santiago de Compostela has a population of 94,000 inhabitants. A former Roman cemetery, the city gained significance, especially in Catholicism, as the resting place of St James, making it a key stop on the 9th century pilgrimage route, and a World Heritage Site. As well as its astounding cathedral and medieval city centre, there are numerous historic sights, including Rajoy Palace and Gelmirez Palace. Don't miss the train which departs from Praza do Obradoiro, which will guide English speakers through many of the city's most important spots.
