In the northeast of England, around 25 miles west of Newcastle, lies the market town of Hexham, with a population of 11,000 residents. It's beautiful gothic abbey dates back to 674; other notable buildings in the town include the Moot Hall, originally built to defend the town from Scottish raiders. It's a great base for exploring the surrounding historic sites, being near Hadrian's Wall. Don't miss the Queen's Hall art centre, with a variety of films, exhibitions and workshops on its programme of events.
