Guide to Isle of Wight

map
The largest island in England, the Isle of Wight can be found in the English Channel, around 4 miles from the mainland. The diamond shaped land mass covers 380 square kilometres, and is striated by several rivers, including the Yar and the Medina. It has a total population of 140,000 people, and is known as an area of outstanding natural beauty, for its beaches and water sports. Its main towns are Ventnor, Yarmouth, Newport and Cowes. Don't miss the Botanic Garden in Ventnor, where a number of tropical plants flourish in the warm micro-climate. Head to Compton on the southwest coast for great surfing, or check out the quirky theme park at Blackgang Chine.
