To the north east of the Lake District, around 3 miles from its National Park lies the marked town of Penrith, north of the River Eamont. It has a population of nearly 15,000 inhabitants, and is well known for its historic sites, including Penrith Castle, and St Andrew's Church. It was also setting for the much loved cult film Withnail and I. Don't miss the Mayday Carnival, which kicks off on the first Monday of May and has everything from the usual fairground attractions to floats and vintage cars!
