To the northeast of the Scottish mainland between the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean lay the Shetland Islands. They have a total population of 22,000 inhabitants, and are well known for their melded Scottish and Norse heritage, most notably the celebration of Up Helly Aa, a traditional fire festival. Don't miss the wildlife spotting boat trips which can be organised from Lerwick, the island's main town.
