With a population of 1,029,000 people, Odessa is one of the biggest cities in the Ukraine. It lies on the country's southwestern shoreline with the Black Sea, and is well known as a warm water port and was once a place of trade with the Russian Empire. Don't miss the opera, the colourful architecture to be glimpsed on a stroll through its pedestrian areas and the beaches. Film buffs should check out the Potemkin Stairs, the subject of the seminal Soviet movie Battleship Potemkin.
