Train from New York to Los Angeles

There are no direct train services between New York and LA. First take a train to Chicago (around 20 hours) from where The 'Southwest Chief' follows the picturesque route through the American West between to LA . The total journey time is around 64 hours and fares start from around $197 one-way. Consider breaking this mammoth journey, at least in Chicago. It is possible to upgrade to a sleeper car from around $600 for the entire journey. The longer 'Texas Eagle' service between Chicago and LA would allow for a stop in San Antonio (among other places) for a visit to the Alamo.
