Train from Los Angeles to New York

There are no direct train services between LA and New York. The 'Southwest Chief' follows the picturesque route through the American West between LA and Chicago. From here take a train to New York (sometimes via Washington or Pittsburgh). The total journey time is around 64 hours and fares start from around $197 one-way. Consider breaking this mammoth journey, at least in Chicago. It is possible to upgrade to a sleeper car from around $600 for the entire journey. The longer 'Texas Eagle' service between LA and Chicago would allow for a stop in San Antonio (among other places) for a visit to the Alamo.
