Take a ferry to Chumphon leaving at 1000 or 1430 (2 - 3 hours, costing around 400 baht). From Chumphon take a train to Bangkok (around 6 hours, seats from 250 baht, sleeper berths from 440 baht). To avoid getting into Bangkok in the very early hours of the morning take either the 1246 train (connects with the 1000 ferry) or one of the many night trains.
