The distance from Melbourne to Apollo Bay is around 200km and the drive will take around 3 hours. Head out of Melbourne towards Geelong and then follow signs to Torquay where you will join the Great Ocean Road. Torquay is a nice option for a stop, possibly at famous Bell's Beach. Also think about Lorne for a stop. You will also pass the 'Round the Twist' lighthouse, which will probably not mean much to you unless you are in your late 20's or early 30's. There is a cafe by the lighthouse so it's a good spot for a leg stretch and a snack.
