Bus from Bangkok to Luang Prabang

There are no direct overland options between Bangkok and Luang Prabang. Take an overnight bus from Mo Chit bus terminal in Bangkok to the border town of Chiang Khong. From here you can take a boat across the Mekong to the Laos town of Huay Xai. From Huay Xai there are a number of options for onward travel to Luang Prabang. Slow boats leave for Luang Prabang daily at around 0900 (once full) tickets are cheaper when bought in Huay Xai (around 100,000 kip) rather than from guesthouses in Chiang Khong (around 1350 baht). There are also speedboats which take only 2.5 - 3.5 hours and are a similar price, safety standards do leave a little to be desired however. There is also a bus from Huay Xia to Luang Prabang which leaves daily at 0930 and costs around 160,000 kip - journey time is approx 17 hours. The entire journey from Bangkok to Luang Prabang can be quite variable in length dependent on mode of transport used and how long you spend in Chiang Khong.
