Take the train to Chumphon (around 6 hours, seats from 250 baht, sleeper berths from 440 baht). The onward ferry from Chumphon to Koh Tao takes between 2 and 3 hours. Ferries depart at 0700 and 1500, costing around 400 baht, a night boat operate some nights. There are good train connections for the morning boat leaving Bangkok at 1930 and 2250.
