The term Middle East was first coined in later part of the 19th Century and moved into common use during the 20th Century. With conflict in the Gulf region over the last few years, in some minds the term ‘Middle East' conjures up images of fanatical bogeymen. In the minds of most visitors to the region, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Cultural norms throughout the region place enormous onus on the responsibility of the host, and this is a responsibility you will find most locals take extremely seriously. You are likely to be offered tea, food and assistance at every turn and one independent traveller the region claimed that the greatest risk she faced during her trip in Turkey, Syria and Iran was in fact death by overfeeding.
