Located on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, the state of Israel is bordered by Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, and is riven by the Rivers Jordan and Arabah. It has a population of around 7.8 million people, and its capital city is Jerusalem. Known for its convoluted territorial history and ethnic diversity, the country has an extremely hot climate. Eilat on the Red Sea is a resort, while Tel Aviv is one of its more cosmopolitan destinations. Home to the Dead Sea, the birthplace of Christ, some of the world's most beautiful snorkelling spots and the world's largest crater, there's a diverse array of activities in Israel for almost any traveller.
