To the south of the Arabian Gulf, on the emirate’s northern coastline, an oasis of glamour and luxury pools the desert. Since the discovery of oil in Dubai just over fifty years ago, the population has increased dramatically, in no small part due to an influx of foreign workers. This also makes it highly diverse, with over 80% of the city’s central population constituting foreigners.  Dubai is renowned for its shopping malls, its opulent hotels and wealthy residents. More emergent in the last few years are large sporting events such as the Grand Prix, and significant dates on the cultural calendar drawing crowds from all over the globe like the Dubai International Film Festival and Dubai Desert Rock Festival.
