In the southeast of British Colombia in Canada lies the city of Fernie, in Elk Valley, home to a population of 4,200 residents. It's fully encircled by the Rocky Mountains, and the nearby Lizard Mountain Range is home to the Fernie Alpine Resort. The area is predominantly frequented by skiers and snowboarders, with the average snowfall coming in at 875cm per year. There are also dogsled tours, stargazing showshoe tours and family treasure hunts organised by the resort, perfect for outdoorsy families.

Local Transport
In the Winter Season there is a shuttle bus every hour to the ski hill (Fernie Alpine Resort) which costs $3 each way or you can buy a season pass for about $250. It stops outside the big hotels all around the main Fernie area. Unfortunately in the 2009/2010 season it has stopped going to the Airport District so it can take up to 20 minutes to walk to the nearest stop if you're staying there.
Fernie is a very friendly town so it's not uncommon to hitch hike to and from the ski hill. If you are going to do this there are designated hitching spots across the Elk River on Highway 3 up to the hill and just down the road from the resort on the way back to Fernie.
