Exploring the colourful continent of South America can see the traveller trekking in the foothills of the Andes to a lost Inca city, or sailing down the Amazon on a paddle steamer. You may find yourself admiring amazing ruins of cities built by the ancient civilizations or the more recent colonial architecture from the period of Spanish and Portuguese rule. The original peoples of South America are thought to have originated in Asia having crossed into the Americas via a land bridge in the Baring Strait. Later the Spanish and Portuguese arrived, bringing with them slaves from Africa. These different peoples have come together to create a uniquely South American culture.
