Guide to Ilha Grande

map
A remarkably underdeveloped island off the coast of Rio de Janiero, Ilha Grande is a rich ecosystem, home to rainforest-dwelling sloths, howler monkeys, parrots and even penguins in the unique surrounding marine habitat. Not only does it have some of Brazil's nicest beaches, an art gallery and an aqueduct, it once held some of Brazil's most nefarious criminals in the Candido Mendez Jail. Now a ruin, it's still a quirky spot to visit.
