Rio de Janeiro surely enjoys one of the most beautiful locations of any major city in the world. The city site on a stunning harbour surrounded by outstanding natural phenomena such as Sugar Loaf Mountain and man made attractions such as the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer on one of the many mountains that overlook the city. Sadly, despite it’s many attractions the city is also well known for violent crime. Slums or favella’s controlled by drug lords are spread throughout the city, often adjacent to middle class areas. Contrary to the perception of many locals, most people living in the favella’s are not criminals and a visit to a favella can be a very interesting and educational experience. Think about doing an organised tour if you want to do this though, as your guide will know where you should and shouldn't walk.
