Southeast Asia consists of the countries east of India and south of China these are Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. It is a hugely varied and interesting area with many religious and cultural groups often living side by side with in a single country. Much of Southeast Asia has been long fought over and its history variously influenced both by neighbouring powers and the imperial aspirations of countries further afield. Each of these incursions has left its mark in everything from politics and architecture to the mindset of the peoples.
