Guide to Jakarta

map
Indonesia's largest and capital city, Jakarta has a vast population of over 9 million inhabitants. It lies to the Northwest of the island of Java, on its coastline. Java is situated at the mouth of the Ciliwung River, feeding into the Java Sea. Formerly a trading port, Jakarta is now divided into five districts, Central, West, South, East and North, and is a lively city of contrast and colour. Visit all of Indonesia at the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a part with a reconstruction of the country in miniature, check out the presidential palace during the weekend when it's open, and don't miss the Puppet museum, for a look at the city's quirky, traditional pastime.
