Occupying the entire islet of Male, the city of the same name is the capital of the Maldives, with over 100,000 inhabitants. Once a walled city, the island is only 1.7km long, making it one of the world's most densely populated cities, though recently the addition of the man-made island of Hulhumale has been reclaimed from the sea to accommodate overspill. The cramped size does mean it's easy to navigate, and there's no chance of getting lost on a sightseeing wander. Don't miss a trip on the Whale Submarine, which tours the waters surrounding Male's coastline.
