Q: I've just read that the Thai government has extended the state of emergency in Bangkok. Does that mean that there is still trouble going on there? I thought it had calmed down?

I've also seen that in the news today. The state of emergency in Bangkok (and 19 other provinces) has been ongoing since the civil unrest in April, so I wouldn't assume that something has changed today, but do keep an eye on the FCO website for their advice if you are travelling soon. I looked today and their overall advice has been the same since things calmed down in May.
