A paradise peninsula 26km off the eastern coast of Thailand, Koh Samui is easily reached by boat from Surat Thani, or one of the daily flights touching down in its international airport. Its former capital, Nathon, is still an important commercial hub for the locals but generally the sprawl of resorts along the beachfront is where tourism has formed distinct mini communities. Although it only has a permanent population of 5000, Koh Samui isn’t all about hammocks and coconut trees. As Thailand’s second largest resort, its economy relies heavily on visitors to the island, and Koh Samui’s formidable appeal as a tourist destination has necessitated four international hospitals, as well as an ever-swelling parade of luxury resorts and private beach houses.
